Granite is natural stone that is resistance to heat, abrasions, stains, chips and dings. The lasting durability assures you of functional use for years to come.
Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone, composed mostly of calcite (a crystalline form of calcium carbonate, CaCO3). It traditionally features swirls and “veins” of colors. Marble is much softer than granite being more prone to scratching and is sensitive to acid.
Not to be confused with quartz, quartzite is a natural stone. Falling in between granite and marble, people often choose quartzite for a more marble type look. More resilient than marble, some quartzite can still have issues with staining, scratching, and etching.
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is characterized by a “soapy” feeling when touched. It is soft but very dense (non-porous) so it will not stain and no liquid will permeate the surface. Colors range from dark gray to bluish or greenish gray.
Similar to marble, limestone and travertine come in lighter cream colors. They are typically sold with honed or textured finishes.
